When There’s Nothing on Fire (#277)
The Confident Leader
BOOST YOUR LEADERSHIP IN UNCERTAIN TIMES
Then he asked the question every leader eventually asks during a season of stability:
“So… what do I do now?”
“In the midst of movement and chaos, keep stillness inside of you.”

Clarify Your Thinking
No fires. No churn. No major drama. Just steady progress.
But for many leaders, that quiet can feel uncomfortable. If you’re not solving problems or hustling for the next win, you may feel unproductive or even irrelevant.
For those who’ve been through this moment, it’s not a critique of your leadership. It’s the recognition.
Accept this moment with gratitude and reflection. This might be your chance to lead with perspective, not pressure.
When the engine runs smoothly, you finally have the space to do what you couldn’t during chaos:
Reflect. Recalibrate. Renew.
What you do now won’t be driven by urgency. It will be guided by intention.
Old Thinking:
If there’s nothing urgent to fix, I must be missing something. I’m waiting for the next shoe to drop.
New Thinking:
I’ve got to remind myself that stability is not stagnation. It’s stewardship. This is the season to replenish clarity and make your next move count. part with clarity and respect so we can both grow in the right direction.

Thoughts Lead to Actions
But many leaders feel uneasy in the calm. They aren’t used to it.
Here’s the truth:
Calmness is not laziness. It’s leverage.
It might feel strange to slow down when things are going well, but this is when visionary leadership is most achievable. The day-to-day won’t overwhelm you. You have perspective. And that offers options.
Here’s how to steward the calm with strategy:
Step 1: Reflect on the Journey
Take time to assess what worked and why. Recount what contributed to the current health so it can be documented and replicated.
Step 2: Invest in the Next Level of Leadership
Use this opportunity to strengthen your bench. Who is ready to step up next? What development have you delayed?
Boost Your Performance
In this week’s video, I unpack how one executive used a rare calm season—not just to rest, but to intentionally position his team for what’s next.
In this holiday season, there’s no better moment to make your next move from a place of peace, not pressure.
What’s Your Opinion?

What is “The Confident Leader”?
During the Covid-19 Pandemic, I began a video series called “Panic or Plan?” It was designed to equip leaders to navigate the doubt they experienced and to rise in the confidence they needed to lead during turbulent times. It took off. I then started this newsletter to equip leaders in the same fashion each week for the doubt that crashes across the bow of their leaderSHIP.
