Motivation Isn’t Enough—But It’s Not the Enemy (#256)
The Confident Leader
BOOST YOUR LEADERSHIP IN UNCERTAIN TIMES
One leader told me:
“I rely on motivation to get me through the week—just long enough to reach the next thing.”
He wasn’t lazy. He was living off adrenaline.
And that works to a point.
What if I told you there was a better rhythm? One that uses motivation without being ruled by it.
“Motivation gets you going. Discipline keeps you growing.” — John C. Maxwell
This Week’s Edition
A study from the University of Pennsylvania found that individuals who rely solely on motivation are more likely to abandon their goals during periods of low energy.
Clarify Your Thinking
Motivation is real—but it’s also unreliable if consistency is what you are shooting for.
Consistency requires more than just hype.
It needs habits. You need habits.
Just like caffeine, motivation can give a much-needed jolt. But discipline is like three square meals a day—it sustains.
The good news is that you don’t have to choose one over the other.
You need to know when to use each.
You can enjoy the rush of motivation—just don’t expect it’ll carry the full load.
Think of it this way… motivation is a spark, and discipline is the system that keeps the engine running.
Old Thinking:
If I’m not motivated, I can’t perform.
New Thinking:
When motivation fades, discipline steps in—and that’s where momentum lives.

Thoughts Lead to Actions
Here’s how to build a rhythm that leverages motivation without overly relying on it:
➤ Use Motivation to Start
Ride the energy when it’s there. Launch the idea. Set the goal. But build a structure immediately.
➤ Build Triggers for Discipline
Tie habits to non-negotiable events: calendar, wake time, meals. Make it automatic.
➤ Design Small, Repeatable Wins
Progress sustains energy. Set milestones, i.e., end of week, first sale, completed project, so upon completion, you can celebrate success along the way.
Motivation is a great gift.
Discipline is the growth plan.
Use both—intentionally as they were designed.

What is “The Confident Leader”?
During the Covid-19 Pandemic, I began a video series called “Panic or Plan?” It was designed to equip leaders to navigate the doubt they experienced and to rise in the confidence they needed to lead during turbulent times. It took off. I then started this newsletter to equip leaders in the same fashion each week for the doubt that crashes across the bow of their leaderSHIP.
